Organ & Blood Donation Artworks
Meaningful artworks that honour donors and encourage conversations about donation
Hospital Art Studio is the UK's leading specialist in organ and blood donation artworks. Over the last 15 years, we have created around 25 donation-related artworks for Hospitals across the country, ranging from donor recognition sculptures and memorial gardens to large-scale murals, suspended installations and public awareness artworks.
Every project is designed specifically for its location, drawing inspiration from local landscapes, wildlife, history and communities to create something meaningful and relevant.
Why create an organ donation artwork?
Organ donation saves and transforms lives, yet it can still be a difficult subject to talk about. Although England, Wales and Scotland now operate an opt-out system, families are still involved in the donation process. One of the most important things anyone can do is make their wishes clear and have conversations with those closest to them.
Art can help start those conversations.
A bold, eye-catching artwork can attract attention in a way that posters and leaflets often cannot. Once people stop to look, accompanying text, donor stories and QR codes can help them learn more about organ donation, blood donation and how to register their decision.
In this way, the artwork becomes more than a visual feature. It becomes a lasting conversation starter.
Donor Recognition, Awareness & Conversation
Many hospitals commission artworks to recognise the extraordinary gift made by organ donors and their families. While these artworks provide a place for reflection and remembrance, they can also play an important role in raising awareness of organ and blood donation.
Art has a unique ability to engage people in ways that traditional information boards and leaflets often cannot. A bold sculpture, mural or feature installation can attract attention, spark curiosity and encourage people to stop and look. Once that connection has been made, accompanying text, donor stories and QR codes can help people learn more about donation and make an informed decision about joining the NHS Organ Donor Register.
This is particularly important in the era of opt-out donation. While most adults in England are considered potential organ donors unless they have recorded a decision not to donate, families are still involved in the donation process. Having conversations and making your wishes known remains just as important as ever.
Our approach avoids generic solutions. Instead, we work with Organ Donation Committees, Specialist Nurses, donor families, clinicians and hospital teams to create something unique to each hospital and community.

Inspired by Place
The most successful artworks feel as though they belong where they are. That's why we begin every project by learning about the place, the people and the stories that make it unique.
Many of our donation artworks take inspiration from local wildlife, landscapes and natural systems that reflect themes of connection, renewal and the gift of life. A single donor can transform multiple lives, and nature often provides powerful ways of expressing that idea.
Whether inspired by a local woodland, coastline, river, wildflower or community story, each artwork is designed to create a meaningful connection between donation and place.
Community Engagement
Increasingly, we are exploring how communities can help shape donation awareness artworks. Through workshops, creative activities and conversations, local people can contribute ideas, stories and artwork that become part of the final design.
This approach not only creates a more meaningful artwork but also helps raise awareness throughout the creative process itself.
Funding Opportunities
Many organ donation and donor recognition projects can be supported through NHS Blood and Transplant funding, charitable funds, hospital charities or local fundraising initiatives.
Let's Start a Conversation
Whether you are looking to create a donor memorial, a public awareness mural, a hospital feature artwork or a community-led project, we would be delighted to discuss your ideas.
Together, we can create an artwork that honours the gift of donation, supports families and helps inspire future conversations about organ and blood donation.
Donor Family Network
Donor Family Network has included our artworks on their website which you can see here.
They are a charity with the vision to promote the positive benefits of organ and tissue donation for the families of those who have died and donated, for recipients and for those awaiting transplants. Visit their website to discover more about what they do and how they can support donors, recipients, and their families.
