verdigris copper sycamore seed

Organ Donation Sculpture for Yeovil District Hospital, Somerset

Yeovil has long been associated with helicopter design and manufacture. Sycamore seeds, often known as 'helicopters', spiral to the ground unlocking new life. This sculpture depicts a single seed as if just fallen to earth.

The sycamore seed and plinth measures 2.5 metres tall. Though strong and robust it is designed to appear delicate, its tracery of veins containing uplifting words of encouragement for the families of donors, donor recipients and those considering organ donation: courage, new life, resolution, legacy, hope.

Feedback

"That is a beautiful piece of art that celebrates all that is special about Organ Donation, thank you so much for your work on this and to everyone @YeovilHospital for commemorating and celebrating their precious Organ Donors and Families. So apt in this #OrganDonationWeek."

"We would like this beautiful sculpture to commemorate those of our patients who, in death, have given the ultimate gift; life. But we also hope that it will act as a thoughtful reminder for those who may have thought about organ donation but perhaps have never got around to joining the register or talking to their loved ones about this."

Joe Tyrrell, Clinical Lead for Organ Donation

"Our wonderful new organ donation sculpture, in the main entrance at Yeovil Hospital, is a fitting theme of 'helicopters' and 'new life'. Thanks to Helen Rose, Joe Tyrrell and Hospital Art Studio for your vision."

Jonathan Higman, Chief Executive, Yeovil District Hospital
